OUR SOCKS
BLISTER FREE GUARANTEE
1000 Mile is best known for its double layer, anti-blister system. The ‘sock within a sock’ design was introduced to the UK by 1000 Mile over 20 years ago with the very first Original sock. The inner layer stays with the foot as the outer layer moves with the shoe, thus eliminating friction on the skin and protecting your feet from blisters. Designed with the purpose of protecting not just athletes but also people with serious health issues like Diabetes where foot health is essential.
WHY DO I GET BLISTERS AND HOW DO I PREVENT THEM?
WE GET ASKED THIS QUESTION A LOT AND THERE ARE MANY FACTORS THAT CAN CONTRIBUTE TO CAUSING THE DREADED BLISTER.
Many people suffer from blisters when running and hiking. Firstly let's take a look at what blisters actually are. Blisters are small pockets of body fluid that form in the upper layer of the skin. They are friction burns caused by continued rubbing and chafing from footwear.
To prevent blisters it is important to diagnose why your footwear is rubbing against the skin. If you can reduce the rubbing then you can reduce the chance of a blister forming.
There can be several factors that contribute to rubbing and the most common are heat, moisture and fit. Here's how we recommend you counteract these factors to increase your chances of remaining blister free:
Heat
It is important to remember that when running or hiking longer distances in hot temperatures your foot size can swell to as much as a half or full size bigger than your usual size. Therefore you need to make allowances for this change in either the fit of your shoe or the thickness of your socks.
It is usually recommended when having your shoes fitted to allow 7-10mm in the front of your shoes when your heel is right at the back as this will give your feet enough space to expand. You could also look at socks which can help regulate foot temperature by the material used or the breathability in the design. If you can help keep the feet cool they are likely to swell less during the day. If you are covering many miles in one day during an event you can even change socks after the first half to keep your feet feeling fresh.
Mositure
Whether your feet become wet through sweat or water ingress your feet start slipping about inside the shoe and they become more prone to develop hot spots which lead to blisters. It is important to ensure that your feet stay dry so look for a sock that wicks moisture away from the skin and avoid completely soaking your shoes in water especially if they aren't waterproof. Damp skin blisters more easily than dry skin so it is worth taking a spare pair of socks with you in case of emergencies. If you suffer from hot feet anyway try looking for socks that are breathable and moisture wicking to help keep the feet cool and dry.
Fit
The sock and the shoe need to fit and work together to effectively reduce friction on the skin. If you have space inside the shoe and you are wearing a thin sock the feet will move around inside the shoe which increases friction and blisters will result. Alternatively if you have a well fitting shoe and a thick sock this will cause the shoes to be too tight and friction on the foot will increase, again resulting in blisters. When making your sock selection there are many options to choose from: light single layers, mid-weight double layers, mid-weight padded single layer, heavyweight double layer and thick padded single layer options. You need to make your selection based on the fit of your shoes and decide whether you have the space for padding or if a double layer will be sufficient.
Here at 1000 Mile you may have noticed that we have quite a wide range of socks to choose from and it can be confusing when making your selection. There isn't just one sock that will suit everyone so we've a range of wicking socks, padded socks, double layer and single layer options. We've tried hard to cover all the bases so we can cater for all our customers.
TACTEL®
SOFT. LIGHT. SURPRISINGLY STRONG.
A dynamic, speciality fibre, Tactel® fibre creates garments that are soft, supple, smooth, breathable and lightweight. According to rigid testing, Tactel® fibre is at least twice as soft and 20% lighter than most other fibres. It also dries 8 times faster than cotton. In addition to being soft and lightweight, Tactel® fibre is strong. The inherent strength of Tactel® fibre enables the production of fabrics that are 3 times as strong as those made with natural fibres.
Many of the 1000 Mile Double Layer socks have a 100% Tactel® inner lining which helps to reduce friction on the skin but also helps keep feet cool and dry during activities.
CUPRON®
ANTI-ODOUR. ANTI-BACTERIAL. ANTI-FUNGAL.
Cupron Enhanced yarns use embedded copper fibre technology which resists the growth of bacteria and fungi that causes odour and poor foot health. Cupron Technology has been independently tested in laboratory settings against generally accepted clinical test protocols, using standard test conditions. Under these conditions, Cupron Technology is consistently found to be non-toxic, non-sensitizing and non-irritating to the skin, with no adverse events reported.
The copper oxide that is the basis for Cupron Technology is made from recycled copper. When Cupron Technology is integrated into textile fibres and other polymers it is typically non-leaching or minimally leaching and so has no negative environmental impacts. Cupron yarns can be found in 3 different styles from our walking and our sports range.
MERINO WOOL
Merino Wool is one of softest types of wool available and is perfect for regulating body temperature. The wool provides warmth without overheating the wearer and it’s moisture wicking properties combined with being slightly moisture repellent allow the wearer to remain dry. Merino yarns can be found in up to 8 different styles from our range.
NILIT® BREEZE
Fabrics knitted with NILIT® Breeze Fibres keep wearers cooler and more comfortable during and after physical activities and even in hot weather. Enjoy UV protection, cooling effect, soft feel and a comfortable fit. You can find the NILIT® Breeze yarn in our new Breeze Sport Sock range.
NILIT® HEAT
NILIT Heat is a unique yarn, created with coffee charcoal, for natural insulation, to keep wearers warmer in cold temperatures. Wicking, breathable and with excellent absorption and moisture control to provide a dry comfort for all day wear. Anti-bacterial and deodorising properties add to overall foot health. Best of all this yarn is environmentally friendly – making use of the natural surplus of coffee bean shells to create the coffee charcoal which works into the nylon fibre to create the end result of NILIT Heat.
TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS
PADDED ACHILLES HEEL
We have added a padded area to the heel of our Fusion range for additional support and to help protect the achilles. The warmth provided by the padding keeps the tendon supple, increasing the blood flow, reducing swelling and aiding recovery.
HEEL POWER
Heel Power fabric technology grips the heel firmly in place, so no slippage! This is now a feature on the Ultimate Tactel Sock, Tactel Anklet Sock, Trainer Liner, Ultimate Racket Sock and Lightweight Walking Socks.
WICKING INNER LAYER
All our doubler layer socks contain 100% Tactel® yarns which not only help to keep your feet cool but dry as well. The Tactel® material wicks moisture away from the foot to keep your feet at a comfortable temperature.
TOP VENTING
To help keep the foot cool we have developed ‘top venting’ with air flow channels on many of our styles.
FUSION SYSTEM
The Mile Fusion sock is the first sock to offer padded zones on the heel and toe for protection and the double layer system for reduced friction. The fusion system can be found in our Fusion Sports sock, Fusion Walk Sock and the Fusion Services Sock.
COPPER FIBRES FOR FOOT HEALTH
Cupron Enhanced copper fibre technology found in our Ultra Performance Sock is proven to be effective against bacteria and fungus that causes odour, offering active protection throughout the life of the sock.
FLAT TOE SEAM
We use a Lin Toe® system to provide a completely flat toe seam on our All Terrain Sock, 2 Season, 3 Season and 4 Season sock. The Lin Toe® seam is a linking system on the outside of the sock instead of the traditional sewn closure.
